Random Whinging

Hello to flist. *waves* Just wanted to quickly post and say that I have not dropped off the face of the earth. I followed a perfectly dreadful week with a busy weekend, and as a result, I'm at about skip 750 on my flist.

Last weekend I managed to corrupt the database in which I keep my huge budget project. On Monday afternoon I learned that none of the data was recoverable. The nightly backup made by our IT department had been failing before they got to my file for about two week, resulting in a loss of almost all of my three weeks of work.

I worked my tail off and managed to reinput nearly all the data I'd lost by Wednesday night. Then the database failed again. On Thursday morning, there was a flurry of activity while my boss called the president of the company that supports the planning software and they got their development people involved, etc. They were able to extract my data and load it into a new database, but they didn't get it to me until 4pm on Thursday afternoon. I then worked until 4:30 Friday morning trying to get enough done so that I wouldn't have to cancel my Friday meetings with the Big Important People. Alas, the meetings were cancelled and I'm still not done. I'm now backing up my new database about every hour.

Everyone has been pretty understanding about the technological glitch, but I'm really disappointed. It's the first budget I've done for this company and I wanted to make a better impression than this.

Had my 25th high school reunion this weekend. It was really quite fun. Hubby and I graduated in the same class, so I was able to bring my spouse and not have to worry that he wouldn't know anyone. On Friday night we went to a party thrown by a group of friends who were boycotting the official events because they were too expensive ($50/person didn't seem that unreasonable to me). I've seen most of them since high school, but probably not for five years. Then it was off to the official event which was held at a local bar. Ended up staying out until 1:15, and we would have stayed longer had the in-laws not been babysitting.

On Saturday I went to a party for a group of us that were on the dance line together, and then the family picnic (which Hubby and kids decided to boycott at the last minute without telling me). The main event was last night and there were probably about 175 people there, most of them classmates rather than spouses. The thing I found most astonishing were the number of classmates who had a huge are range between their oldest and youngest kids. Most of them were due to having children from a first marriage and then again from a second marriage, but not all of them. And there were an astounding number of people who had four or more kids. And some classmates are still having babies at age 43. We have one classmate who is a convicted murderer, and several successful actors. It was really very interesting to see what everyone is up to.

And one of my friends put her home movies on DVD which happen to include lots of shots of Hubby as well as my graduation ceremony. With 375 people in the class, they didn't catch everyone's name being read, but they caught mine, which was fun. And there is a tiny cameo of my mom and dad which was fun too.

Now it's back to work for the rest of the night. With any luck, we've solved the technical issues and my life will be much better next week.

Bleah - what a crap week!

I thought you were quiet, but I had crikkita to play with for a couple of days, and that distracted me.

You have to do a 'phone post for me - look - http://www.livejournal.com/users/shocolate/254010.html

I'm sorry about what happened at work. That's unfortunate. Wish I could say something more comforting, but you know what? I'm fairly sure that if htey fix the glitch, this shouldn't happen again, at least for a while, and that the next presentation will go smoothly. :)

I'm glad you had fun at your reunion. Things like that make me feel awkward, so I don't think I'll go. Heh. But it sounds like it was good times on your end.

Thanks for your nice words of comfort. *hugs*

Actually, I find that after 25 years, I couldn't care less whether these people from high school like me or not, which is very liberating. No point in being awkward.

Glad you had fun at your reunion. I told my HS reunion committee about 10 years ago to leave me the hell alone. They have.

I was just thinking today, "Where the hell is [info]magicofisis??" And now I know. *pets you* That IT thing is mucho scary. Mr. Annearchy says that no IT manager worth his salt would have allowed that backup failure to go on for weeks. The reunion sounds like it was a lot of fun. At least you're still in touch with people from your high school class. I lost track of all of my classmates years ago, though my dad emailed me last week that the brother of one of my friends had died. *shrugs*

Obviously they had no idea the backups were failing, but still, I hated to be the test case.

I think the main reason I'm still in touch with my classmates is that Hubby and I were both in the same class, so we naturally gravitated towards people we both know. Plus, my best friend is a classmate, and we were roommates for several years after college. When you have a class of 375, it's pretty easy to run into people you went to school with.
